Last week, Activision sent a mysterious crate to various publications with instructions not to open it until 12pm ET on Monday, August 10. That's just a couple of hours from the time of this writing, but some voice lines found in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare may let the cat out of the bag early. It seems Frank Woods from the Black Ops series could be making the jump to Modern Warfare.
Fans have discovered voice lines for Frank Woods in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare files. More specifically, Woods says, "This is it...ready to make history?" which matches well with the "Know Your History" Warzone teases that have been popping up in the battle royale. Presumably, the crate will signal the official and long-awaited reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, with Frank Woods coming as a playable operator to Modern Warfare as a way to promote the new game, though that's just speculation at this time.
It's been noted that this Frank Woods dialogue has actually been in the game for longer than some think. Dataminers first discovered this Frank Woods dialogue during Modern Warfare Season 4, so it seems his addition has been planned for quite some time. In any case, here's hoping fans get some more concrete information with the crate unboxing that's set to take place later today.
Of course, the possibility can't be ruled out that Frank Woods will actually end up being exclusive to the Warzone battle royale and won't be featured in the standard Modern Warfare multiplayer. The Warzone battle royale is set to be a "constant" for the Call of Duty franchise moving forward, which means that it will add new content based on future games, eventually leaving its connection to Modern Warfare behind as Infinity Ward takes on its next project. Presumably, this means there will come a point where Warzone will start receiving operators that won't be in Modern Warfare, and one has to imagine that will happen as early as Black Ops Cold War dropping later this year.
As far as Black Ops Cold War goes, rumor has it that Frank Woods will actually be the main character in the game, as a sort of new take on the plot of the original Black Ops. And as its leaked name implies, the game will be set during the Cold War, with previous leaks indicating that players will fight in the Vietnam War.
If the Activision crate does reveal Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War as expected, then fans should have their answers sooner rather than later.
