The official announcement of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, a re-imagining of the fan-favorite CoD sub-franchise, was electrifying and enticing to its fanbase, to say the least. Since then, details for the game have appeared online, such as its support of cross-play, free maps, the elimination of the season pass, and the fact that the first-person shooter features a child soldier mission. And while much of the news is promising, PC and Xbox players may feel slighted by the fact that all DLC for the first-person shooter will be time-gated to the PlayStation 4.

Notably, this isn't the first Call of Duty game to feature timed exclusivity, but given that the contract between Activision and Sony Interactive Entertainment that had set this up expired with Black Ops 4, it was looking as if this wouldn't be the case for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Nevertheless, it appears that the two companies must have signed a new contract, as all DLC will arrive on the PS4 7 days before the PC or Xbox.

Considering many of the aforementioned reveals about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare were for the purpose of bringing all Call of Duty gamers together, it's strange that this timed exclusivity deal is in place, especially given that the contract had expired. But it is worth mentioning that 7 days is not a terribly long wait, as some games have featured timed exclusivity contracts that were much longer.

The good news is that much of the promised post-launch content is set to be free. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's DLC maps were specifically stated to be free, and other post-launch content such as special events and other, unspecified content will also be free. That's not to say there won't be paid DLC, as that hasn't been confirmed yet, but with a solid amount of free content, it may help those who have to wait.

It remains to be seen what else will be revealed about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in the coming months, but knowing that it is inspired by Modern Warfare 2's "No Russian" level, players should be prepared for the dark and gritty realities of war.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will launch on October 25 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
