Being the latest addition to the popular trend of live service-style games, it’s no surprise that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare continues to receive new content post-launch, and if the latest hearsay about the game is to be believed, a new weapon will be coming very soon, offering a more low-tech alternative from the rest of Modern Warfare’s selection of guns.

Activision and Infinity Ward haven’t really opened up yet on which weapons will be coming to the game next, but it’s possible that one of them will be the crossbow. This weekend, a Twitter user was playing a game on the Ground War map Krovnik Farmland when they discovered a poster of a crossbow in one of the buildings on the map’s E side. Not long after they shared a screenshot of the poster, TheGamingRevolution, a leaker with a solid track record when it comes to accurate COD leaks, offered a winking emoji and a teasing reply: “Coming soon to a video game near you.”

If this turns out to be true, it won’t be the first time a crossbow has shown up in a Call of Duty game. Its most recent appearance was in 2017’s Call of Duty: WW2, but before that it showed up in 2010’s Black Ops, 2012’s Black Ops 2, and 2014’s Advanced Warfare. As for how “soon” it’ll show up in the series' latest entry, it’s possible that it could happen as soon as this month. According to an earlier claim made by TheGamingRevolution, Modern Warfare is set to receive a “big overhaul” update in November, though the specifics were similarly kept to a minimum.

Whether a crossbow will manage to sooth fans’ current frustrations with the game at all is another question entirely. Needless to say, Modern Warfare hasn’t had the smoothest debut so far, with several of the game’s weapons and abilities being bugged in various ways, resulting in hacking perks that don’t work, weapon recoil that is wildly inconsistent, and shotguns that have the range of sniper rifles, to name a few.

Then again, Infinity Ward has been trying to squash Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s bugs as fast as possible, so hopefully these will only be short-term problems. With any luck, the game will be smoothed out enough for players to get their fill of the game’s current weapons and then look forward to whatever comes next. And given Activision’s push to cut down on non-cosmetic microtransactions this time around, it’s very likely that the crossbow and other potential future weapons will be free.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is now available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
