Why Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Likely Won't Have Battle Royale Mode

Retail listings for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare provide evidence that the upcoming first-person shooter is unlikely to have a battle royale mode like Black Ops 4.

Since its initial announcement, Activision and Infinity Ward have mostly focused on showcasing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's campaign. Not much has been said about a potential co-op mode or the franchise's iconic multiplayer, beyond the fact that Zombies is not returning. And while it hasn't been officially confirmed by Activision yet, it seems as though battle royale isn't returning either.

This is because the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare retail listings say that the game only supports 2-20 players in any given multiplayer match. While 20 players is a bit larger than the usual 16 players that most Call of Duty games have supported in the past, it's still quite a ways from the 60-100 players that are common for battle royale games.

Unless Call of Duty: Modern Warfare plans to do a much smaller-scale battle royale experience, which isn't unheard of, fans of the genre shouldn't expect to see it in the upcoming game. While some may be disappointed by this news, those who are tired of the battle royale craze will be happy to see Call of Duty: Modern Warfare stick to the franchise's roots.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare looks to be going back to the franchise's roots in more ways than one. This is especially apparent in terms of narrative, as the game is a full reboot that will bring back fan-favorite characters from past Modern Warfare games. Returning characters confirmed so far include Captain Price and John "Soap" MacTavish, but more are expected to join the lineup by launch.

The story itself looks to be more like classic Call of Duty in that it won't feature any science-fiction or supernatural elements, instead opting to tell a grim and realistic modern warfare story. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's campaign will be filled with shocking and emotional moments, with the developers taking inspiration from Modern Warfare 2's controversial No Russian mission. Perhaps the most controversial Call of Duty: Modern Warfare mission revealed so far is the one where players will take control of a child soldier.

More on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's campaign and its multiplayer modes should come to light sooner rather than later. Activision will be featuring the game at E3 2019 in a special E3 Coliseum presentation on June 11 at 3:00pm PT.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will launch on October 25 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
