There's no doubt that Call of Duty had a solid 2018 with Activision and Treyarch's release of the multiplayer-driven Black Ops 4, but it looks as if the brand is already prepared to turn its focus toward a fresh installment for the new year. Now, it appears as if there's a possibility that the next entry in the long-running first-person shooter franchise could see the revival of a fan-favorite sub-series from the annals of CoD.

According to a cryptic message shared by Infinity Ward's Senior Communications Manager, Ashton Williams, many are speculating that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to become the franchise's title for 2019. Fans and industry personalities are theorizing as much following a tweet from Williams that included a GIF with a static effect overlaying a skull, with conjecture being that it's a nod to the Modern Warfare series character Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley, who wears a skull-print wraparound cap.

It's also worth noting that others have hypothesized the tweet being a reference to Infinity Ward making a sequel to 2013's Call of Duty: Ghosts, which had used the image of a skull in its marketing materials to promote the title leading up to its release. However, according to Kotaku's Jason Schreier, Ghosts 2 is out of the question, thus prompting people to suppose that Williams' tweet is alluding to Modern Warfare 4 instead.

All things considered, this wouldn't be the first instance of folks surmising that Modern Warfare 4 was in the cards for 2019, as a rumor from several months ago made the rounds online after the site Gaming INTEL purportedly received information from anonymous sources confirming as much. Be that as it may, we will simply have to sit tight and wait until Activision and Infinity Ward decide to publicly announce exactly what Call of Duty property will be released later on this year.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has yet to be officially revealed.
