Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is still six months away from launch, but that hasn't stopped fans from discussing what's coming next for the top-selling shooter franchise. We know that Infinity Ward will be developing 2019's Call of Duty game, and if a new rumor is to be believed, the game it's working on is none other than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

This rumor comes from the site Gaming INTEL, which cites unnamed sources. According to the sources, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will feature a campaign, the standard Call of Duty multiplayer experience, and a Zombies mode, with a battle royale mode being discussed as well.

Further evidence that Modern Warfare 4 is next year's Call of Duty comes from the Twitter account of voice actor Craig Fairbrass. This past March, Fairbrass updated his Twitter bio to indicate that he has worked on four Modern Warfare games, though he has since changed the bio to remove mention of the unannounced Modern Warfare 4.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered negative reviews Steam

While fans should take this news with a grain of salt, let's assume for a moment that Gaming INTEL's sources are correct, and 2019's Call of Duty is indeed Modern Warfare 4. If so, it sounds like the game will deliver a more traditional Call of Duty experience, and will be a change of pace from Black Ops 4. For example, whereas Black Ops 4 won't have a campaign, the rumor is that Modern Warfare 4 will have one. Black Ops 4 is also looking to make some significant changes to the Call of Duty multiplayer formula, but Modern Warfare 4 will reportedly deliver a "customary" COD multiplayer experience.

It's also worth pointing out that, according to the rumor, there's only been talks for a battle royale mode in Modern Warfare 4 so far. It's possible that Infinity Ward is waiting to see how well Black Ops 4's Blackout mode does before fully committing itself to adding battle royale to the game. Then again, it may be excessive for Activision and its teams to dedicate resources to multiple battle royale games, so perhaps Black Ops 4 will stick with battle royale, and Modern Warfare 4 will be a more typical Call of Duty game, with just campaign, multiplayer, and zombies.

Unfortunately, we will likely be waiting a long time before we learn whether or not Gaming INTEL's sources are correct. In fact, fans should expect to have to wait for about a year, if not longer, for concrete information on what 2019's Call of Duty has in store, and if it is Modern Warfare 4 as rumored.
