Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be introducing a third-person mode. Call of Duty has strictly been a first-person shooter franchise for much of its existence, but the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be shaking things up. While the game will still primarily be an FPS, it will also offer Call of Duty fans the option to play from a third-person perspective.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's optional third-person mode was announced at the Call of Duty Next event, a showcase that revealed MW2 multiplayer, Call of Duty: Warzone 2, and Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's third-person mode is exactly as it sounds - it allows Call of Duty fans to play multiplayer from a third-person perspective instead of the usual first-person view.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's third-person mode represents a significant change, and so it's no surprise that Activision is hoping to test the feature in the beta. The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer beta, kicking off this weekend for PlayStation gamers with early access, will have separate playlists for first-person and third-person. This will give players the chance to test how the third-person view changes up the Call of Duty experience. Based on the feedback it gets from the beta, Activision could decide to have third-person available as an option in all playlists instead of having its own, separate ones.

There are some gameplay quirks to Call of Duty's third-person modes that players should be aware of. While in third-person, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 players can swap which shoulder the camera is hanging over, and the game switches to first-person when aiming down sights. It will be interesting to see how the community reacts to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's third-person mode, and with the beta set to start on September 16 for PlayStation gamers that pre-order, fans won't have to wait long to find out.

The beta will not only give Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 players the chance to try the new third-person mode. It will also feature some of the new match types that will be featured in the game at launch, like Prisoner Escape and Knockout. Any PlayStation gamers that want to jump into the action right away will want to pre-order Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Doing so will also get them early access to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign on October 20.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
