With Call of Duty: Vanguard proving to be one of the least popular games in the series so far, Activision and Infinity Ward have wasted no time announcing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and getting a jump on the next game's marketing campaign. Now a new campaign trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has dropped along with a bunch of details about what fans can expect from the game when it releases later this year.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign looks to be as action-packed as fans have come to expect from the series, though some may be surprised that the game appears to be taking more inspiration from Call of Duty 4 than the original Modern Warfare 2 story-wise. In fact, there are some familiar scenes in the trailer, like the boat from the "Crew Expendable" mission in Call of Duty 4, and it looks like Task Force 141 even finds the infamous nuke, or a similar weapon of mass destruction.

This should come as no surprise to those who played the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot because while that game modernized the MW characters and story, it also sort of set up the events depicted in Call of Duty 4 in the process. There are some other sights spotted in the Modern Warfare 2 trailer that should be familiar to those who played Call of Duty 4, and it will be interesting to see just how much this new game follows that title.

We know that there will be some significant changes, like the fact that Ghost is in on the Crew Expendable mission this time around when previously he didn't appear until the 2009 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, for example. Based on the trailer, it looks like Ghost will be getting significant screentime in this new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which should be good news for fans of the character. He will be joined by Captain Price, Gaz, Soap, and newcomer Colonel Alejandro Vargas.

Besides the campaign, the 2022 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is also bringing back Special Ops, or Spec Ops, a popular mode from the original version of Modern Warfare 2. Details on what Spec Ops will entail are hard to come by at the time of this writing, but it's confirmed that it will be a 2-player affair like before. Spec Ops in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is described as a "tactical co-op mode" that "advances your team-building skills," so it will be interesting to see how it stacks up.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will also have a robust multiplayer offering to go along with its single-player campaign and Spec Ops. There are rumors that there will be a new Escape from Tarkov-inspired mode called DMZ as well, but no mention of it has been made so far. Modern Warfare 2 will be featured at Summer Game Fest on June 9, so fans should have even more information on the game soon enough.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
