One of the most controversial video game missions of all time is "No Russian" from the 2009 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The horrific mission is disturbing enough that the game asks players right at the start if they are OK with viewing the content, or if they would rather skip it. In it, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 players participate in a mass shooting at a Russian airport, mowing down defenseless civilians as part of a twisted false flag operation.

The No Russian mission in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remains one of the franchise's most controversial missions ever, becoming a measuring stick of sorts when it comes to disturbing missions in other Call of Duty games. The No Russian mission was disturbing enough in the original version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but some Call of Duty fans may not even realize that the mission is even more messed up in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered.

In 2020, Activision released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, which is exactly as it sounds. Instead of remastering the entire Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 experience, Activision instead opted to remaster only the campaign, giving it improved visuals and other tweaks to bring it up to modern standards. There are some minor changes in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, but it seems one of the more notable ones flew under the radar for many.

As pointed out by Reddit user No-Car434, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered's version of No Russian has an added detail that wasn't in the original version of the game. When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered players play the No Russian mission, they can actually hear the sounds of a baby crying coming from one of the bathrooms. This was covered by a couple of YouTube videos and the like back in 2020, but it did not receive all that much attention

To reach the bathroom in question, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered players will want to play the No Russian mission until they get to the point where they are following the villainous Makarov and his men down an escalator to reach the lowest floor of the terminal. At this point, instead of following Makarov outside, players can instead turn around and find the bathrooms. If one stands near the bathrooms, they can clearly hear a baby crying.

This makes the No Russian mission in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered that much more unsettling, letting players know that they have potentially orphaned this child with their actions. However, it's possible that at least one of the baby's parents are hiding in the bathroom with it, and so this could be seen as a sign that there were more survivors of the attack than originally believed.

The original version of No Russian as seen in the 2009 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is mostly the same, but there is no crying baby. We tested this out for ourselves, playing through the No Russian missions in both the 2009 version and the 2020 version. In our own testing, we were able to confirm that the crying baby is indeed there in the 2020 version as shown in the video, but it's absent in the 2009 version; instead all we heard were sirens and shooting.

For those who may not remember, the entire point of the mission is that players are an undercover American soldier attempting to embed themselves in Makarov's group. They participate in the shooting to prove their loyalty. After all, who would suspect someone is a double agent if they are willing to commit such a heinous act? Unfortunately, it's revealed that Makarov was aware of the player's true identity the whole time, and he winds up leaving them for dead at the airport to implicate the US in the attack, igniting a full-blown invasion of the US by Russian forces.

Since the bathrooms are out of the way and there's no reason for players to go to them if they actually want to advance the story, it makes sense that this change went unnoticed. It leaves one to wonder if there are other changes in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered that players didn't notice when the game first came out. Perhaps Call of Duty fans can scour the rest of the missions in search of hidden changes while they wait to learn more about the 2022 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which will be a direct sequel to the 2019 game as opposed to a remake of the 2009 original. This means that it won't have the No Russian mission, but knowing Call of Duty, it's still unlikely to pull any punches.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
