Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 seems to have undergone some substantial UI changes compared to its 2019 predecessor, and fans don't seem to be all too thrilled about what Infinity Ward has done, broadly speaking. The Call of Duty franchise has gone through many iterations of its user interface over the years, but the latest batch might not be all that popular, it seems.

While the user interface is often overlooked in video games' promotional materials, pulling this feature off properly is incredibly important to keep players immersed. According to some beta access players, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 isn't doing all too hot in this respect, and Infinity Ward should consider reworking the whole thing ahead of the game's launch date.

This year's COD seems remarkably promising in many respects, such as the way Modern Warfare 2 handles its movement system, for example, but not everything is perfect according to beta players. Reddit user tactikz4 said that they had never been quite as confused by a video game interface as they are with Modern Warfare 2's UI, with many others agreeing with this assessment, going so far as to suggest that Infinity Ward should overhaul the whole thing before the game comes out later this year.

Others were more specific in their critique, with Skysflies posting on Reddit how they strongly dislike the game's insistence on using horizontal menu options instead of traditional, vertically-oriented UI. TheDudeWhoCommented agreed, too, suggesting that the UI looks as if it's been made for a mobile game. Indeed, Modern Warfare 2 shares progression with Warzone Mobile, but it remains to be seen whether interface elements end up getting reused, too.

Whereas some of the latest Call of Duty trailers hyped gamers up with exciting prospects like Gunsmith 2.0, the return of fan-favorite movement features, third-person gameplay options, and the introduction of full-fledged raids, for example, the first PlayStation beta has put a bit of a dampener on the hype with its UI problems. Critics on Reddit do admit that these are relatively minor complaints, but a bad UI could end up being very problematic for the game in the long run.

Call of Duty fans have also been vocal about their desire for persistent lobbies in Modern Warfare 2, though it remains to be seen whether Infinity Ward considers this to be an important feature for the game. The status of the game's beta UI is questionable, too, and it's worth keeping in mind that it's entirely possible that the game launches without any major changes to how information is being displayed to the player. Whether the developer changes anything in this respect remains to be seen.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
