After months of waiting, fans finally got their hands on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Season 2 last week, and opinions have been somewhat mixed. While Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 has just been given a deluge of new content, including a new Resurgence mode and the brand new Ashika Island map, Modern Warfare 2 hasn't been quite so lucky. Aside from a new Battle Pass and a handful of new weapons, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Season 2 really didn't add too much to the game, and what it did add isn't entirely original.

For months, Modern Warfare 2 players have been desperately pleading for more maps to be added to the game's multiplayer mode. And while Infinity Ward has made some efforts to appease those wishes, it could have handled it a little better. Season 2 added a total of four new maps to the game, with two of those being direct copies of Warzone 2.0 POIs, one of them being a remake of an old Modern Warfare 3 map, and just one being a wholly original map, which many had already played during the game's Beta. It's pretty plain to see that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 needs more original content.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Needs More Original Content

At launch, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had a solid number of original maps. On day one, players could drop into 10 different multiplayer maps, and while every Call of Duty playlist has its duds, Modern Warfare 2 had a surprising amount of hits. For a while, the general player-base was mostly pretty happy with the amount of content in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, especially when Spec Ops and the Campaign mode were taken into consideration.

However, times have changed, and fans expect a little more from their AAA multiplayer experiences, especially when they adopt a live-service approach. The disappointments with Modern Warfare 2's content really started to surface with the introduction of Season 1 at the end of 2022. This update added just one map to the game, a remake of Modern Warfare's Shoot House map. Season 1 Reloaded continued the disappointing trend, adding another remake, this time of Shipment. While these maps are widely loved by the community, there was a desperate lack of original maps in the game, and now that issue has only worsened.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Season 2 has just added two new 6v6 maps to the game, with the first being a remake of Modern Warfare 3's Dome, and the second being Valderas Museum, a map that fans have already played during Modern Warfare 2's Beta. To make matters worse, this remake of Dome is essentially just lifting the area from Warzone 2.0. While remake maps have a nostalgia element, they shouldn't be the only map additions in each Season. Call of Duty has always prioritized original content first, and Modern Warfare 2 is straying into dangerous territory by relying too heavily on nostalgia to please fans.

If there's anything Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's map playlist has shown its creators, it's that fans expect more original content in the series going forward. Remake maps are more than okay, and they can even help to bring back old fans, but they shouldn't be the focus of a new Call of Duty game. After all, there wouldn't be any iconic maps to remake if Call of Duty's devs didn't take a risk in the first place. Thankfully, Infinity Ward has teased a completely new map for Modern Warfare 2 Season 2 Reloaded, so hopefully that marks the start of some original content additions.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
