Activision has confirmed all the game modes that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer will have at launch, though fans may be sad to see that some fan favorite modes will be missing in action. Call of Duty enthusiasts who have pre-ordered the digital version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have been able to play through the game's campaign in early access, but the real meat and potatoes of most Call of Duty games is definitely the multiplayer.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer will be available come the game's proper launch date, October 28. On that day, Call of Duty fans will be able to battle it out across a variety of maps and game modes. Activision recently highlighted all 11 game modes that will be available in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer on launch day, though there are some notable omissions that might upset fans of the franchise.

The 11 multiplayer game modes that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer will have at launch are Control, Domination, Free for All, Ground War, Ground War Invasion, Hardpoint, Headquarters, Knockout, Prisoner Rescue, Search and Destroy, and Team Deathmatch. Most of these are set up for Call of Duty's traditional 6v6 gameplay, though Ground War and Ground War Invasion are larger scale, 32v32 affairs. Missing from the list are fan favorite modes like Gun Game and Gunfight, unfortunately.

Despite the popularity of Gun Game, many Call of Duty titles tend to launch without it, only to then add it later on as a temporary playlist. This happened with the 2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game, as well as the games that followed it, so it's not all that surprising to see it happen with Modern Warfare 2 as well. As for Gunfight, a version of it has been a mainstay in Call of Duty games since it made its debut in the 2019 MW, but it's missing from Modern Warfare 2 at launch for some reason. It's possible Gunfight will be added to Modern Warfare 2 at a later date, but nothing has been confirmed at the time of this writing.

Most of the multiplayer game modes in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at launch should be familiar to fans of the franchise, though there are a couple of new modes to take note of as well. One is Knock Out, where there are no respawns and players have to hang on to a package for longer than the enemy team. The other is Prisoner Rescue, where one team has to guard hostages and the other team is tasked with rescuing them. Similarly to Knock Out, Prisoner Rescue in Modern Warfare 2 does not allow for respawns.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
