Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a reboot of the 2009 game under the same name, but the story has changed. The new game continues where the 2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare left off. The launch trailer reveals that the familiar team from the predecessor has returned from the mission in Urzikstan, but the fight between the terrorists and state actors is picking back up. In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the veterans from Task Force 141 -- with some notable and local additions -- take on a new mission south of the US border.

In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Task Force 141 entered a three-way conflict in a fictional land of Urzikstan, where Russian forces were fighting against a threat from a terrorist organization Al-Qatala and terrorist-opposing local rebel militia, led by Task Force 141 ally Farah Karim. Initially, the team consists of SAS Captain John Price, SAS Sergeant Kyle "Gaz" Garrick, and former Delta Force operator "Alex", but the game later also introduces two more British fighters Simon "Ghost" Riley and John "Soap" MacTavish. Modern Warfare set the continuation of the story at the end of the campaign where Price and his team are asked to continue working for the US government.

Modern Warfare 2's Returning Cast Members

call of duty modern warfare 2 campaign story trailer

The Modern Warfare 2 launch trailer reintroduces a few of the characters from the previous game. Sergeant MacTavish is the first to appear in the trailer, welcomed to the new environment by a local Special Forces Colonel, Alejandro Vargas. Others of the aforementioned team members are present, too. Leading the Task Force 141 is once again Captain John Price, and the skull balaclava-wearing Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley and Sergeant Kyle "Gaz" Garrick are seen in several scenes.

Vargas seems to introduce the team to the setting in Mexico and the City of Souls the mission takes place in. Behind the operation are CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell, who recruited Price in the Modern Warfare, and United States Marine Corps General Shepherd. Shepherd has a new look, and is voiced by and modeled after Glenn Morshower. The US officials have intel on a mysterious character behind the new threat, and he's planning something dangerous.

The operation takes place in a fictional city in Mexico, that Vargas calls the City of Souls. It is terrorized by the local cartels and the terrorist organization Al-Qatala. Corruption is rampant and refusing to work with the cartel could mean the dire consequences. The City of Souls is close to the United States border, and attacks are directed towards the border crossing. The launch trailer also reveals a lot of the weaponry of Modern Warfare 2, including AKs and bazookas wielded by the terrorists and scoped ARs on the hands of Ghost.

An unknown local explains the rationale behind the terrorist acts portrayed in the Modern Warfare 2 campaign. According to them, the intimidation and violence is simply a facade for covering the cartel's drug trafficking. Terrorism is simply a business decision. As the governments are busy dealing with terrorism, the war on drugs is on the back burner.

It is also revealed that the terrorists have acquired weapons of mass destruction, and targets are unknown. Due to the city's close proximity to the border, United States Marine Corps General Shepherd demands answers to where they intend on deploying these weapons. Missions on the trailer can be seen on the high rises in the city, on oil fields, and in the desert. Previously, the multiplayer maps during the Modern Warfare 2 beta revealed a bustling marketplace, a farm setting, and museum. The trailer ends with Shadow Company, CEO and Commander Phillip Graves questioning a captured commander of a foreign terrorist organization.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
