Tuning a gun in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ensures that no two guns, even with the same attachments, perform the same way. Players can always select modifications that help do what they'd like, but tuning allows them to virtually eliminate things like recoil or bullet spread.

This all comes at the expense of other attributes, of course. No gun in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 can be perfect. That's not the claim. The idea is that every weapon can be perfectly tailored to the gamer who uses it. Get into the gritty details of a favorite weapon and put the finishing touches to craft a truly unique weapon that performs like none other.

Note: Weapon tuning is somewhat glitchy, especially when patches introduce buffs and nerfs to certain guns. Sometimes weapon tuning is completely disabled (that's the case as of the time of this writing). When it comes back, the same tuning will not work the same way. After every patch, unequip and re-equip any attachments and reset the tuning to maintain the gun's integrity.

Max Out The Weapon Level

It's not enough to simply unlock all the weapons and their variants. Players will have to use the gun in question until it hits level twenty, the maximum level.

At that point, the tuning feature will become available. Look at the individual weapon attachments and note the new presence of a "tune" button. Select that button to get started.

Tuning A Weapon

All attachments default to a somewhat balanced state. Take a look at the sliders on the bottom and left side of the screen. Move them up and down and watch how certain stats improve and regress. It's all about give and take; as a weapon is made better in some areas, it will get worse in others.

This can result in some extreme weaponry. For example, if players have already equipped attachments that take recoil down as much s possible, tuning each other to further reduce recoil will result in a weapon that essentially has no recoil. However, this weapon, while an impressive laser, will also like suffer in every other area. Consider this tradeoff when making such adjustments. New game modes might encourage an imbalanced weapon, but general gameplay often finds that these sacrifices are often not worth it.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
