Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will receive multiple changes leading into the next beta period, including adjustments to footstep audio in online matches. Leading up to the beginning of October, players will have opportunities to test out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's cross-play functionality in a large-scale open beta.
Developer Infinity Ward released a community update regarding the first weekend beta for Modern Warfare 2. Footstep audio was very high in the multiplayer beta, and players were able to hear enemy footsteps from a very long distance. As a result, players with headsets were given a competitive advantage from the start of the Modern Warfare 2 beta. Infinity Ward is addressing the footstep audio issue before the second weekend beta of Modern Warfare 2 begins across all platforms.
Infinity Ward is reducing footstep audio range for a number of player movement states such as jog, sprint, and tactical sprint. The adjustments to footstep audio will allow for a more fair experience as players move around the maps in Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer. Alongside the footstep audio change, friendly and enemy footsteps will be distinct in the upcoming beta. The change allows players to better coordinate with their team while still being able to recognize enemy footsteps.
The Call of Duty developer plans to share more information about the footstep audio changes soon according to the latest Modern Warfare 2 community update. Changes discussed in the update will be active during the second weekend beta starting Saturday, September 24. The first Modern Warfare 2 cross-play beta begins on September 22, but it will not feature the footstep audio changes. Infinity Ward is expected to share more details once the first cross-play beta concludes on September 23.
Player feedback is critical to ensuring a fun and fair experience in Modern Warfare 2, and these changes could benefit multiplayer when the full game launches this October. Ahead of launch, Infinity Ward should continue to be transparent with its community and provide detailed updates. In addition, the developer should consider the Modern Warfare 2 players calling for UI changes as well.
Modern Warfare 2 should see an even greater influx of player activity when the second weekend beta goes live. The open beta will be available across all platforms, allowing players to dive right in without a pre-order and unlock unique rewards for Modern Warfare 2.
