The campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 appears to be a massive hit on Steam. Modern Warfare 2 officially comes out on October 28, but its campaign is available right now to users who preorder the game. This move gives fans a chance to finish the MW2 campaign before the multiplayer and co-op modes launch with the full game.
The story takes place after the events of 2019’s Modern Warfare and follows the journey of Captain Price and the other members of Task Force 141. Fans who finish the campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 get bonus rewards in the rest of the game that include various XP boosts, cosmetic items, four operators, and more. It looks like Activision’s decision to offer early access to the campaign as a pre-order bonus was a success.
According to SteamDB, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had a peak concurrent player counter of 94,655. 54,735 users are playing the game at the time of this writing, and 73,903 was the peak number within the last 24 hours. Not counting open betas, the all-time peak player count is the third highest in Call of Duty history on Steam, with Black Ops being the highest full release at 118,593 simultaneous users.
Sitting above Black Ops is the beta for Modern Warfare 2, which had a peak concurrent player count of 168,330. The beta was only available to PlayStation customers in the initial few days, before becoming open to users across all platforms. While this number should not be compared to the data for a full-priced release, it was perhaps a good indication of the general level of interest in the game.
It should be noted that Call of Duty has returned to Steam after a lengthy absence with MW2. The last Call of Duty game to launch on the platform was WW2 in 2017, with the other games only available on Battle.net. 2019’s Modern Warfare was probably the most popular Call of Duty game released in this time frame, but its player count is naturally not available on SteamDB. Similarly, it’s not possible to compare the PC performance of Modern Warfare 2 to Black Ops 4, Vanguard, and Black Ops Cold War due to the lack of data.
Fans interested in playing Modern Warfare 2 on release day can start pre-loading the game ahead of its scheduled launch on October 28. The file size of MW2 is surprisingly small for a Call of Duty title, but it can always change drastically due to post-launch updates.
