Call of Duty has been on a roll as of late, with Modern Warfare being the highest selling COD title of all time, Call of Duty Mobile continuing to be a success, and Call of Duty: Warzone proving that the franchise can be triumphant as a free-to-play battle royale. One of the big surprises this year has been the remastering of Modern Warfare 2, and thus far that decision looks to be a smart one as well.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered has now sold 3.4 million copies, according to digital data analytical firm SuperData. With the game having been released on March 30, those are impressive numbers.

Another reason that the sales numbers are notable is that Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered launched as a PS4 exclusive. The title only released on Xbox One and PC on April 30, so the sales numbers will probably continue to rise as more players get the opportunity to enjoy the game.

Activision was smart with some of the promotional aspects of the game, as pre-ordering or purchasing Modern Warfare 2 Remastered netted Modern Warfare and Warzone players with bonuses. Many players were used to buying an operator bundle inside of Modern Warfare for $10-$20, so buying the Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered bundle for $20 that came with the game, an operator, a gun blueprint, and more felt like a natural extension, and even a cheap one.

Not all of the publicity behind the game has been good, however, as most fans weren't happy about Modern Warfare 2 Remastered's PlayStation timed-exclusivity. It seems rather silly to have to wait an extra month for a game that was originally launched over 10 years ago.

Additionally, the Modern Warfare 2 Remaster comes without multiplayer and Spec Ops, two modes that should be standard in the eyes of many gamers. One could argue that the sales for the remaster would be exponentially better of multiplayer were added to the mix, as the addictive, chaotic, and fun mode is considered one of the best in the entire series. However, it could have been overwhelming and split the player-base to have gamers enjoying multiplayer in 2019's Modern Warfare, Warzone, COD: Mobile, and the remastered MW2 all at the same time. In the end, the sales numbers say that it wasn't a bad decision to bring MW2 back, even if some would like to see more from the title.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
