As Call of Duty: Vanguard nears the halfway point of its lifecycle, rumors are starting to increase about what could be next for the Call of Duty series in 2022. Infinity Ward is serving as the lead developer on the 19th entry in the long-running shooter series, with Activision previously saying the next title was a sequel to 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Players may soon get their answer if a possible reveal date leak circulating on social media turns out to be true.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the 16th entry in the series, the eighth title developed by Infinity Ward, and served as a reboot for one of the franchise's most popular sub-series. The game centers around a conflict between Russia and the fictional country of Urzikstan, putting players in the boots of several soldiers fighting in and around the central conflict. Infinity Ward pushed the real-life influences it was pulling from for the game, which can be seen in missions such as "The Embassy," which was inspired by the 2012 attack on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya, led by local militant groups.

The success of 2019's Modern Warfare reboot led many players to almost immediate speculation a sequel was next up for Infinity Ward when it came time for the studio's next Call of Duty in 2022. Activision finally confirmed this would be the case in February 2022, as mentioned above, saying Modern Warfare 2 and a major Warzone update were coming later in the year. Speculation has since focused on when the game's reveal may occur, which, if Call of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope on Twitter is to be believed, will happen on May 30.

As of this writing, Activision and Infinity Ward have yet to tease when the reveal is, but the allegedly leaked date would fall in line with the previous Call of Duty reveal windows. Activision has, historically, revealed the respective year's Call of Duty in mid-to-late spring and led into full gameplay reveals at a bigger event, either E3 or another dedicated game event.

The other historical evidence giving this date credence is the potential cross-promotion with the 2022 NBA playoffs. Activision has previously teamed with the NBA during the league's post-season to reveal the game anytime between the conference playoffs and finals to get the most eyes on it. It is not out of the question that a potential May 30 reveal airs during the NBA playoffs as the conference finals may still be going if either series goes seven games.

Call of Duty 2022 is currently in development.
