The Call of Duty franchise has had dozens upon dozens of multiplayer maps over the years. For every beloved location like Shipment or Nuketown, there are several forgettable maps, as it takes a perfect storm to create an iconic multiplayer location for Call of Duty. Usually, three distinct lanes, a unique setting, and options for every gameplay style are the recipe for success, but achieving that is easier said than done. However, one trait that a few classics have is hidden map spots, something Activision and its developers should consider bringing back.

While glitches have led to some overpowered spots over the years, like the rooftops in Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Castle or the out of map spot on Sub Pens, Infinity Ward and Treyarch used to sneak in some official, tough to reach spots that allowed players to have a tactical advantage over the enemy team. While some of these positions were strong, they took both luck and skill to reach, ensuring that they were a fair mechanic that helped certain maps stand out.

Classic Hidden Map Spots in Call of Duty

Modern Warfare Highrise

The Highrise rooftop is the most iconic hidden map spot in Call of Duty, as it is not easy to reach whatsoever. Players need to land a tricky jump onto a collapsing scaffolding, climb it, hop onto the ledge of a skyscraper, and continue walking across this ledge until they reach the other side of the building. Once they are there they can ascend to the top, and with a tactical insertion, sniper rifle, and the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s One Man Army, they were basically unstoppable. Only an explosive or streak could bring them down and destroy their tactical insertion, with the spot allowing gamers to see almost the entire map.

What kept this Highrise spot balanced and fun was that, though it was strong, it took some effort to reach. Players may be gunned down several times trying to ascend to the top of the roof, as they are fully exposed when moving up the scaffolding and creeping along the ledge. Reaching the rooftop was undoubtedly rewarding, as it featured Call of Duty’s teddy bear easter egg alongside a major power position, but getting to the top took effort.

Alongside the famous Nuketown RC-XD track, Call of Duty: Black Ops experimented with one of these positions in the fan favorite multiplayer map Summit. If players head into the snow base’s server room, they can climb onto some computers to leap over a railing. Though the ledge looks unaccessible, it is fully reachable, with players then able to jump out the window and onto a radar tower. The jump is tough to pull off, and the radio tower spot lacks the cover of Highrise’s roof, so it is less powerful. Still, the fact that this secret spot even exists is fun, and sharing the knowledge of how to reach it with friends was enjoyable back in 2010.

Modern Warfare 2 Should Revive Call of Duty’s Hidden Map Spot Trend

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Post Launch

While Modern Warfare 2 will seemingly be bringing back Highrise, and assumedly its secret rooftop spot, Infinity Ward should not stop there. With 11 6v6 maps and 5 Ground War maps coming at launch, with more to be added throughout the seasons, the studio should sneak some well-hidden spots into a few of the maps.

Just like the Highrise roof and Summit radio tower, reaching these locations should take some solid platforming skills. Further, if the spot players are trying to reach is a good position as opposed to just a fun little secret, Call of Duty players need to be easy to shoot down as they make their way toward it. As long as the same approach is taken so that there is a balance between risk and reward, it would be nice to see Highrise-like rooftop areas make a comeback.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
