Without a doubt, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a film industry juggernaut, with myriad fans looking forward to Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home this year. Nevertheless, it apparently falls short of topping one of the longest-running and most popular gaming franchises to date, Call of DutyFrom Modern Warfare to Black Ops 4, the first-person shooter series has been the #1 best-selling gaming franchise for the last decade, which seems set to carry on into 2019.

This announcement came during an Activision Blizzard press release, wherein Rob Kostich fills the head of publishing role left vacant by the departure of former Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg. Kostich has been involved with Activision for 15 years and was the GM and Executive Vice President of the Call of Duty franchise through the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

This bombshell announcement was made when Kostich was named President. It was said that "as a franchise, Call of Duty has now generated more revenue than the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the box office, and double that of the cumulative box office of Star Wars."

Activision actually stops short of revealing how much revenue Call of Duty has made, but considering the Marvel Cinematic Universe box office total exceeds $7 billion, it's certainly not chump change. Notably, though, Activision is only comparing the revenue generated by Call of Duty to the box office totals of the MCU. Disregarding the merchandising and licensing campaigns that make Marvel tons of money, it arguably somewhat skews the comparison.

Nonetheless, it is a great time to be alive and a fan of either the Call of Duty franchise or the MCU. After all, Avengers: Endgame will likely close a chapter that culminated in Avengers: Infinity War, and if rumors are to be believed, the supposed next entry in the franchise, Modern Warfare 4, will feature a snow-laden battle royale mode. That should be taken with a grain of salt, but still, everything is looking up for both franchises in 2019.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
