Call of Duty Ghosts Gun Game Update

While Team Deathmatch is certainly the bread and butter of Call of Duty's online multiplayer, the franchise's decade-plus history has seen several unique and exciting multiplayer modes. Many of them have become staples of the franchise moving forward, while others have been one-off, but still treasured, additions.

One such addition that didn't make it into the regular playlist rotation is Gun Game, a mode introduced in the first Black Ops. It was a relatively simple mode, but one that stood out for several reasons. And the good news is it has returned for Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Developer Infinity Ward has dropped a new multiplatform title update for the game to coincide with the release of the Onslaught DLC for Ghosts. The update features plenty of spot fixes and gameplay tweaks, as any update should, and it also adds the Gun Game mode back into the Call of Duty fold.

Gun Game, for those that might not know, is a free-for-all multiplayer mode where every kill swaps a player's old weapon with a new one. However, what makes Gun Game unique is the weapon progression. See, rather than unlock "better" weapons with every kill, each player is forced into a set order, and the only way to win is to get a kill with every gun, starting out with a lowly handgun and finishing with a high powered RPG for example.

In addition to Gun Game, the update also takes the Heavy Duty mode out of the regular multiplayer playlists, adds some changes to perks and a few weapons, and introduces eSports rules into Clan matches. You can check out the full list of changes here.

Even though gamers on non-Microsoft platforms are left out of the Onslaught action, Infinity Ward has given them incentive to jump back into Call of Duty: Ghosts' multiplayer. Moreover, rather than increase the focus on competition, and thereby further highlight the faults of this year's iteration, Gun Game should inject some much-needed levity. And for those who do enjoy Ghosts' intense competition, the new eSports rules for clan matches will fit in nicely.

With Call of Duty struggling to hit the same sales numbers it used to, a lot more pressure is likely placed on DLC release and updates. Rather than giving players more to do in the game they love, now the task becomes giving players reason(s) to return.

Are you glad to see Gun Game return to Call of Duty? What other modes would you like to see return?

Call of Duty: Ghosts — Onslaught is out now for Xbox 360 and Xbox One. PC, PS3, and PS4 release dates have not been announced.
