Despite lukewarm reactions from critics, Call of Duty: Ghosts hasn't sold any slower than usual. Although the talk of the franchise needing to change sooner rather than later continues, Activision is ready to start pushing out the first few rounds of DLC for the first-person shooter.

And whatever the reasons - be they to attract a bigger audience, or compete with more niche cooperative titles - the traditional modern military combat and Nazi zombie survival has gotten yet another addition: Aliens.

Although Evolve, the upcoming co-op game from Turtle Rock Studios is getting the majority of the monster hunting attention from gamers, COD fans won't have to wait nearly as long to declare war with giant alien beasts in Ghosts' Extinction mode. The first DLC pack for Ghosts launches next week and unleashes a brand new chapter in the standalone campaign.

"Set in a remote facility hidden deep within the Alaskan wilderness, the shadowy Nightfall Program has been researching the origins of the newly revealed alien threat. A small recon team of elite soldiers must infiltrate the site to retrieve intel and exterminate the hordes of savage creatures and along the way uncover a three-story tall terror unlike anything they've faced before."

Episode 1, which is packaged into the Onslaught DLC is titled Nightfall and follows two new characters in the first of four DLC chapters set to be unlocked as the game's ongoing season of DLC progresses.

Extinction may not have quite the same addictive magic that captivated CoD Zombies players, but does offer a change of pace from the typical battle scenery. If the sales of Ghosts was any indication, then it seems highly likely that the 'Onslaught' DLC will sell incredibly well regardless of the quality. The same may not be said for those which follow if that's the case, but hopefully the new aliens that 'Nightfall' introduces will offer a challenging mission, not another simple add-on as was the case with the first dose of Extinction (read our review).

Although Ghosts is available on nearly every major platform, next week's 'Onslaught' DLC will be temporarily exclusive to Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Sometime shortly down the line gamers on PC, PS3, and PS4 will also be able to get in on the alien-hunting action.

Do you plan to spend much time in CoD's alien-hunting mode or will you be sticking to the iconic multiplayer deathmatches that the franchise is famous for? Sound off in the comments.
