While the main Zombies offering of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has received plenty of positive responses from longtime fans, Onslaught has struggled to get off on the right foot. Despite this, Treyarch does not seem to be giving up on the alternate Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies mode.

Criticized for its exclusivity to the PlayStation platform as well as a slow, overly challenging gameplay loop, Onslaught has seen its fair share of criticism since Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launched. However, one change that Treyarch has in store for the mode could make its gameplay more engaging while adding a bit of variety. According to the blog post detailing the Onslaught changes, Treyarch will be adding a new enemy type to the mode.

Likely to be a new Zombies mini boss, Treyarch makes an interesting comment that suggests the enemy will be a “who” rather than a “what.” It seems that whatever this mini boss will be, it could have some significance to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Dark Aether storyline as opposed to just being a larger zombie like the Megatons. However, the addition of a new mini boss to Onslaught’s enemy lineup is not the only change coming to the game mode.

As highlighted in the post, the Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 map Express will be playable in Onslaught. Much like in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War multiplayer, the classic location will remain largely the same to how it was in its original appearance. Boasting the same map layout and visual design with a fresh coat of paint, the location should be a blast to play on in both 6v6 multiplayer and the PlayStation exclusive Zombies Onslaught game mode.

With tricking the Zombies into being hit by Express’ bullet train will surely be fun, there will be a few other things to gain in Onslaught as well. New Blueprint challenges will be available to Onslaught players, allowing for some extra rewards to be reaped by playing the mode. More Call of Duty Zombies intel will also be collectable, giving players invested in the Dark Aether story’s lore some extra bits of backstory. Like with previous Zombies Onslaught intel, the items will likely have a chance to drop from Express’ mini boss.

It remains to be seen if these changes will be enough to get players more invested in trying Zombies Onslaught. Even if these updates are not enough, though, the upcoming Firebase Z map is looking to be a fully satisfying content drop for the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies community.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
