Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies players have been given access to the hardest map thus far with Mauer Der Toten. As such, gamers will likely want to get their guns upgraded quickly, something that the Aether Tool is perfect for in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Found through the Fury Crystal side quest in Outbreak, Aether Tools take the form of a wrench covered in Aetherium. When gamers pick them up, their weapon rarity will instantly increase one level. While this is helpful with weak guns, it is even more useful for upgraded weapons, as gamers can instantly bring a gun from Epic to Legendary if they use an Aether Tool. With that final upgrade normally being so expensive, players may want to wait until they have an Epic weapon before they attempt this easter egg.

Before gamers can purse the Aether Tool, they will need to activate the power. Fortunately, the game guides them through this process, making things easy for newcomers and veterans alike. After killing the Tempests from Outbreak mode and inserting the fuses, players will want to head to the rooftop where they first spawned in. On the front left corner of the roof, a white piece of paper will appear. When players are ready and prepared to hit five targets, they can hold square on this piece of paper to have them spawn in.

The target will move from left to right, going from rooftop to rooftop. As such, players would be wise to take note of the target positions before starting this Mauer Der Toten easter egg. The first target will spawn in right behind the yellow Konighaus sign that sits on the opposite rooftop. After the target has been shot, the next one will appear in the same building, popping up in a set of windows two floors down. The Korber sign holds the next target, with it appearing behind the letter “O.” The next one will be far in the distance, hiding in three yellow windows to the right of the Korber sign. The final target appears behind the Der Dozent sign to the right of these windows.

  • Target 1: Konighaus sign.
  • Target 2: Konighaus windows, two doors down.
  • Target 3: Korber sign.
  • Target 4: Der Dozent windows, top floor on the left.
  • Target 5: Der Dozent sign.

Once all the targets have been shot, the tool should appear by the feet of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players, letting them upgrade their gun of choice right at the sniper nest. If the targets do not seem to be breaking, players may want to try a different sight and weapon, as the targets currently seem to be a bit finicky. Unfortunately, though, they will only have one chance at the Aether Tool per game.

While gamers have had luck with a few different Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War weapons, the most consistent seem to be Tactical Rifles and Sniper Rifles. As for a scope, something like the Axial Arms 3x should give players the necessary range to see and hit the targets. For those that would prefer to upgrade another weapon, using a Tactical Rifle or Sniper Rifle should not get in the way of that. The Aether Tool upgrades whatever gun players are currently holding. As such, gamers can use a Sniper or Tactical Rifle to finish the target practice easter egg, then switch back to the gun they would like to upgrade. With a free Aether Tool being so beneficial, this small side quest is worth doing every game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
