Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies players are finally enjoying a brand-new Survival map, with Mauer Der Toten full of new mechanics and objectives. One of the most memorable is undoubtedly Klaus, an AI ally that will assist Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players during the main quest and in regular gameplay.

Klaus is also needed to open access to the free version of the CRBR-S Wonder Weapon. Beyond that, he is an ally that should be active as much as possible, as he will shoot the undead and revive players that go down. With Klaus able to be directed around the map by the player, and each activation only costing 2,000 points, he is undoubtedly the best AI companion Treyarch has added to Zombies thus far.

Building Klaus In Mauer Der Toten

To build Klaus, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players need to collect a battery and a pair of hands. In the case of the battery, players only need to kill one Krasny Soldat mini boss. Spawning in at about Round 10, it should be easy enough for gamers to take down early on. Once dead, the battery can be looted from the Krasny Soldat’s corpse.

After the Krasny Soldat’s battery has been collected, players will need to Pack-A-Punch their weapon. Specifically, they will want to get the Brain Rot Ammo Mod on their gun of choice. From there, they can head to the hotel that can be ziplined to from the spawn area. In Room 305, a boarded-up door can be found. If a Zombie is Turned with Brain Rot right next to this door, it will be broken down, allowing players to enter. Alongside a safe and piece of intel, Klaus’ hands can be found around a body’s neck. Players can pick these up, returning them to the unstable-but-hilarious robot down in the subway Safe House.

After giving Klaus his hands and battery, some dialogue will play before he enters the fight and helps players survive in Mauer Der Toten.

Upgrading Klaus In Mauer Der Toten

For those not content with the regular version of Klaus, gamers should be happy to know that he can be upgraded. First, players will want to dig up the bone piles at Checkpoint Charlie, searching in the mud much like they did in the Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 map Origins. Eventually, a radar dish will be found, which players should take to the top of the Garment Factory. If they place it on the upgrade machine, they can then direct Klaus in front of it, and the bot will get inside. After a one-minute defense sequence, he will step out of the machine with a stronger form. If he is not stepping in, players should let Klaus kill some Zombies, though he will likely get the required kills on his initial appearance.

For the next upgrades, gamers will need the blacklight. This can be acquired by having Klaus open a locker in the Switch Control Room close to where he was built. Marked by the number 0, it should be easy to find. Players will then want to pick up the blacklight and search the map for 6 green power boxes. If they examine each with the blacklight, they can find a glowing Klaus symbol next to the correct power boxes. Two of these power boxes will have the symbol, so players can stop checking as soon as they have found the correct ones. The locations are as follows.

  • Hotel Lounge
  • West Berlin Street (on the wall below the Wunderfizz machine that holds all of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's perks)
  • Blasted Suite
  • Maintenance Tunnel (close to the Switch Control Room)
  • Apartment 5th Floor
  • Ghost Station (before dropping onto the train track, on the right wall after going through the Service Passage)

If players take Klaus to the two marked panels, he will punch them, revealing a Floppy Disk. Players will want to pick up these two Disks as soon as they appear, however, as the boxes will close and the process will need to be repeated if they take too long. Klaus can then be taken back to the upgrade machine and upgraded with one of the disks. The next disk can be used at the upgrade machine in the following round, letting players upgrade Klaus once more. With the upgrades giving Klaus some goth and punk looks that he does not seem very pleased with, the process is as funny as it is beneficial. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players can gather the upgraded Klaus from the Safe House or by using the yellow call box near the Trial machine.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
