Prior to the release of Call of Duty: Vanguard, it was reported that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was a massive success commercially for Treyarch. As such, it was rumored that some year 2 content would be coming, and now Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players can access some of that content.

Alongside a remaster of the classic Black Ops map WMD, players can access a new Assault Rifle as part of the Black Ops Cold War year 2 content. However, with the weapon meant to be inaccessible until Treyarch officially releases it, players will need to complete an odd challenge to unlock the secret gun early. What makes the challenge so strange is that it is not completed in Black Ops Cold War at all.

To unlock the new Assault Rifle, dubbed the Vargo 52, players need to deal 1,000 points of damage in 15 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer matches. After gamers have done the required damage in the 15 multiplayer matches, they are free to use the Vargo 52 in Black Ops Cold War. Several players have unlocked the gun in the days since this was discovered, with some even getting the Dark Aether camo for the weapon.

It remains to be seen when Treyarch will officially add the weapon so that players can unlock it directly through Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The only reason that players discovered the Vargo 52 was because of data mining, as the game’s recent 9GB update seemed suspicious. Clearly, it was, and players have found that some other content is seemingly imminent. A remaster of Jungle, a Scythe melee weapon, and a Ravenov Operator for Zombies fans have all been discovered. Considering that Treyarch officially teased a new Operator recently, the new content should be coming soon.

Currently, the Vargo 52 is not usable in Call of Duty: Warzone. Still, many seem to be excited about the new content, even if the current unlock process requiring another game to be played is tedious. Overall, the situation is very similar to what happened with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s extra maps, as a few additions were made a while after Season 6 had wrapped up. These additions were not announced, either, likely so that players would focus more on the active game. Either way, it is nice to see Black Ops Cold War get some extra support.

Gamers will want to keep an eye on Treyarch’s social media accounts in the coming days, as the datamined content should be added soon. For those that cannot wait to use the Vargo 52, though, downloading Modern Warfare would be a wise idea.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
