The Mystery Box is a key component to the popular Call of Duty Zombie formula, but it appears that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be making some changes. As Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War brings the franchise to the next generation, all eyes are on the development team to excel above Modern Warfare.

Treyarch released some added information to prepare fans for the upcoming Zombies experience. This large guide gives fans a good look at what is inside the next title, and it brings up one interesting change to the Mystery Box. After years of randomized Call of Duty Zombies loot, the box may be adding another factor to the player's game.

The change has to do with weapons themselves, but any change to weapons inherently changes the Mystery Box. Activision and Treyarch have unveiled its upcoming Zombies Rarity system that will be adding another layer to wall loot and Mystery Box purchases. Players will find that all weapons come in five tiers of rarity: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. As the tiers increase, the weapons get more powerful and added attachments. Early rounds have a higher chance of dropping lower tier weapons, whereas the longer fans survive the more likely the box will reward a player with a Legendary reward.

To really scale how much this matters, a common weapon would be the same grade as any Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War loadout brought into the game. Uncommon raises the weapon's damage by around 50% and comes with two extra attachments, but a Legendary version has a 300% damage increase and comes with eight total attachments.

This change to weapon variation affects both Wall Buys and Mystery Box content. As Wall Buys now offer random attachments, there is now a strategy that must be monitored when it comes to purchasing guns from the Mystery Box.

In previous games, players would simply access the box, find a powerful weapon, and move on to Pack-A-Punch. Now, players have a reason to return to the box and roll again several rounds later in hopes of finding a higher ranked version of each gun.

It is unclear how the various gun tiers will interact with the Pack-A-Punch machine if the Pack-A-Punch even makes an appearance. From the description given by Treyarch, this upcoming Zombies experience will be a step up from previous titles. Still, it is inherently Zombies so fans should always bring their best to the dangerous round-based experience.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is set to release on November 13th for PC, Ps4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
