The Call of Duty games usually secure the top spot for sales each year that passes, but that doesn't mean everyone is getting in on the game. There are always those who, for one reason or another, aren't invested in the franchise or simply weren't invested to that year's iteration, keeping them out of the game. However, those that haven't bought Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will soon be able to try it for free.

From July 22 to July 29, Activision and Treyarch will be running a free access period for Black Ops Cold Warallowing gamers to give it a shot without investing too heavily into it. As is typical with this kind of event, any progress earned during the free trial will carry over to the full game if players decide to purchase it. Additionally, that progress will also be valid for Call of Duty: Warzone, which primarily means weapon progress will transfer.

The exact details of the event haven't quite been nailed down yet, but expect more information to release soon. Specifically, Activision and Treyarch should be revealing which playlists trial period players will have access to, and the logistics of downloading the free trial itself. Players will be given access to Multiplayer and Zombies, including the new "Mauer Der Toten!" content of Season 4: Reloaded. Additionally, free trial players will be able to access playlists centered around the new Rush map.

black ops cold war season 4 reloaded update release date

The free trial comes at an interesting time for the Call of Duty franchise. Typically, the new game for the year is announced around June, or earlier in prior years, though fans still haven't heard anything official about the next Call of Duty game. However, it's pretty late in the game to pick up Black Ops Cold War, as the new entry will, presumably, be released within the next four months or so. Of course, the games still get support after new ones release, but it's an interesting time in the cycle regardless.

All that aside, though, the free Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War trial coincides with Season 4: Reloaded content being added to the game, which seems intentional. The new content drop will add Multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone content to the game, like the new Operator Weaver. Fans will need to wait for the finalized details before they know exactly how and when they'll be granted access to the game, but it should be a nice mid-summer distraction.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
