Fans of the classic Zombies game mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War can learn more about Firebase Z. Treyarch Studios released a video giving a behind-the-scenes look at the new map coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Surviving hordes of zombies is a mainstay of the Call of Duty series. The classic mode pits a group of players up against a rising tide of undead, and as soldiers make their way through the map, they can unlock areas and the best weaponry to guard against the onslaught. Over time, the game has gotten more advanced, and it is looking like Firebase Z is continuing the tradition.

Set in Vietnam, Firebase Z will be elevating the Dark Aether storyline following Samantha Maxis, and the map itself includes two main areas. The first is the actual firebase, which is where scientists and soldiers do experiments. The other portion is known as the village, and this is the housing for scientists to sleep and complete research. Players will begin in the village, and after making their way through it they can jump into a teleporter to the firebase. This will be a hub area, where the team can explore and roam around the edges spending aether for upgrades.

As a map with a scientific theme, there will be plenty of little secrets for players to uncover. These extra mechanics provide challenge for the group to learn how each function works, and what the best use is. The developers mention that at the high levels of Firebase Z, soldiers will need to make use of artillery strikes and napalm to handle the assaulting hordes. There is even a new zombie coming called the Mimic that hides as a normal item around the map and changes form at the last minute to surprise unsuspecting troops.

Overall, it sounds like Treyarch is going all out for the newest Zombies map. Lead writer Craig Houston describes how many of the team have been around since the early days of the storyline, so the group is feeling a lot of excitement for the upcoming expansion. While it is an expectation for Call of Duty players at this point, adding new content can be a challenge. From the behind-the-scenes video, it seems like there will be a lot to uncover in Firebase Z.

Some may view the hype behind the Dark Aether storyline as unrealistic, as the series is not necessarily known for groundbreaking narrative. Especially with this being a side mode, it is unclear how Treyarch Studios will be able to expand on Samantha's quest. In any case, the map is looking like a fun time for fans of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
