One of the more popular modes in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is Zombies. The mode is a frantic and fast-paced affair, and developer Treyarch has put in effort to build a narrative for Zombies that stands alone from the traditional Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War campaign. After teasing that a new map was coming to Zombies, a trailer has dropped for the Firebase Z mission.

Zombies in Black Ops Cold War started with the "Die Maschine" event set in an abandoned Nazi research facility in Poland, kicking off the Dark Aether story. As leader of the Requiem division of the CIA, Grigori Weaver and his team encounter a strange machine along with hordes of ancient Nazi zombies. Firebase Z is a continuation from that point, and early images of the new mission showed off a return of Zombies character Samantha Maxis.

This latest trailer blows the door wide open on the upcoming Firebase Z mission, with Requiem taking the fight to Outpost 25 in Vietnam. A village and some abandoned facilities set in a tropical jungle shift the scene from the cold desolation of Poland in "Die Maschine." There are lot of elements returning from previous Zombies storylines. Fans have spotted the Russian Mangler from the Gorod Krovi map, the Wundersphere launching pads, and the Tombstone perk coming back for Firebase Z. The action looks intense, and fans won't have to wait long before jumping in, as the map will be released on February 4.

There had been speculation based on some Firebase Z teaser images that this new map would feature the return of Zombies favorite Dr. Edward Richtofen. It appears that Richtofen is not part of the Firebase Z mission, though that doesn't discount the possibility the doctor might return at some point. Given Zombies involves parallel universe mechanics, the Dark Aether storyline could certainly reintroduce a character out of the blue.

The Zombies mode in Call of Duty games is a nice change of pace from the traditional multiplayer and campaign modes. Warzone may have stolen a fair bit of the spotlight, but with some fans dismayed at the current state of Warzone, the timing of this Zombies release could offer them a respite from the frustrations of Verdansk.

The trailer makes no mention of any changes that might come to the PS exclusive Zombies mode, Onslaught, though there has been talk of changes coming to that mode as well. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has had a few hiccups along the way, but the zany Zombies content seems to be hitting all the right beats for fans of the mode.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
