It's that time of year again, and a new Call of Duty has dropped to dominate the multiplayer market, this time with the highly anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. However, one promising aspect on PC, an HD texture pack, wasn't one of the features arriving with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War when the game launched, instead requiring an additional download.

While the settings menu does offer a link to download the texture pack, the path to getting the highest quality settings for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a little less clear that players would like. Fortunately, this is a handy guide for players looking to get the HD textures and jump into the game with the best visuals available.

In order to quickly pick up Cold War's HD textures, players just need to find the game settings in the Battle.net app and select modify install twice before checking the box for the High-Resolution Assets in the Install Content list. The path isn't very intuitive, and the game will have to be closed in order to download the extra files, but once it has completed, then players will be able to adjust their settings to the highest quality available. This texture pack is fairly large as well, requiring a 45 GB installation, which might be the reason that the additional HD settings don't download automatically thanks to the over 80 GB file size of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on PC.

Grabbing the download itself is relatively simple, although some players have been confused about how to pick it up since the in-game instructions just shuts off the game, which can easily be mistaken for a crash. Any players who haven't begun the download yet and would like to grab the HD texture pack may want to download these separate textures right away, instead of having to jump through the hoops the game presents. Considering how the updated textures make Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's maps and models appear, it's certainly worth the extra effort for anyone with a PC that can run the game at optimal settings.

It is strange that the path to unlocking the best look for the game is so difficult to find, especially if Activision is hoping for Cold War to outperform Modern Warfare, which received almost universal praise last year. However, this was likely an oversight issue and with any luck, Treyarch will address the inconvenience in the future to streamline the process.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
