Just a few years ago, it would have been almost impossible to explain to others that people would be purchasing games almost exclusively for the multiplayer experience. With releases like the Call of Duty series though, this has become a reality. While games like Call Of Duty: Black Ops contain both a single player and multiplayer experience, it is the competitive multiplayer that acts as the game’s main draw.
Now, just over half a year after its launch, Black Ops has overtaken its predecessor as the UK’s highest selling video game of all time. While the previous record-holder, Modern Warfare 2, sold 3,702,410 copies in the UK to date, Black Ops has officially surpassed it with a total of 3,722,411 cumulative sales as of June 25.
While these are some truly impressive numbers, it’s also not entirely surprising to see the newest iteration of the venerable Call of Duty series achieving record-breaking numbers, further exemplified by the fact that over 2 million gamers signed up for the Call Of Duty Elite beta.
In just a few short years, the Call Of Duty series has quickly risen to become one of the most recognizable and widely-played game series’ of all time. Not only does Black Ops have an insanely popular competitive multiplayer component that has drawn in just about every possible demographic, but through the release of DLC like the upcoming Annihilation pack, Treyarch is ensuring that the game doesn’t get stale for its players as time progresses.
With gamers excitedly discussing the next installment in the series, Modern Warfare 3, there’s no doubt that it will continue to be a strong year for the Call Of Duty series.
Do you think Modern Warfare 3 will follow in its footsteps, eventually overtaking it?
