With bigger and better games come bigger and bulkier updates. Where the games of the last generation would cap out at about 10GB, it isn't that rare for current generation games to break more than 60GB. With these bigger file sizes has also come the annoyance of day one updates, which are a requirement for online play.  Typically, day one updates for some titles are only around 12GB, but the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will more than quadruple that number with a massive 50GB day one update.

This update won't be that big of a deal for players that purchase a digital edition of the game, especially if they opt to pre-load the title, but it is a serious bummer for everyone that purchases a physical copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Anyone hoping to hop on during the game's launch night will likely be disappointed by the large update, which could take a few hours to download depending on network speed.

Activision also stated that the game will require 112GB of free space for an "optimized download experience". However, this should only take up about 55GB of storage space once completely installed.

Perhaps the most upsetting thing about the update is that it takes away access from multiplayer game modes until it finishes installing. This will likely be seen as a serious let down for many, especially considering that the game has no single-player campaign and features almost exclusively multiplayer modes.

Black Ops 4 isn't the only massive Triple-A game to require such a ridiculous amount of space this October. Red Dead Redemption will also reportedly feature a 105GB install size. Both of these games feature cutting-edge graphics and a healthy dose of content, which accounts for the giant size of the two titles. However, if more games start to require this amount of storage space, it could make even 1tb hard drives begin to look small.

Whether or not a new standard for large file sizes emerges remains to be seen, but hopefully, next-generation hardware will ship with large enough hard drives to make the games and updates seem less severe. At the very least, maybe developers will be able to keep day one updates at a reasonable size.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is set to release on October 12th, 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
