Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 developer Treyarch has already made some major changes to the game's Blackout battle royale mode following the recent beta, such as adjusting body armor as a result of fan feedback. But it's not just body armor and player counts that are subject to change in the run-up to release as the inclusion of custom games is also up in the air.

In a recent interview with Game Informer, Treyarch's studio design director, David Vonderhaar, played it coy when asked about custom games. The Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 developer said "I hope" that the team will be able to implement custom games and his boss thinks it's a "great idea", Vonderhaar stopped short of confirming the feature. "I cannot confirm or deny such a thing," said the developer.

Vonderhaar also said that there is a "vision" of how custom games would work and that the team is already putting some things in place to facilitate custom game settings in the mode. But ultimately, Vonderhaar was unable to provide a definitive answer on whether it would be included in Blackout or not.

Call of Duty fans are especially eager for Blackout to include a custom game mode because it would allow them to get grips with the mode's massive map. Blackout features several Call of Duty multiplayer maps from previous games, but the map is still huge in its own right. Plus, with threats coming not just from other players but zombies too, knowing as much as possible about your surroundings is a massive boon. Not only that but custom modes would allow players to play without pressure or the fear of getting sniped by a random.

Other benefits of a custom mode include the ability to test out the mode's perks and see their limits. Again, a better understanding of the mode's weapons or abilities could be a big advantage and custom games would act as a training facility for those who want to sharpen their skills.

Unfortunately, though, it seems that fans will just have to wait until closer to launch for a proper answer about custom games. Treyarch may have finally settled on a player count and it already has a substantial amount of player feedback to implement, but for the time being, custom games will be one Blackout feature that remains as a work in progress.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 releases October 12 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
