Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has officially been unveiled, but the latest iteration of the series won't be like those before it. Treyarch is adding a brand new battle royale mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 that the developer has branded Blackout. Blackout, like other battle royale games and modes, will feature a giant map and lots more players than any Call of Duty multiplayer match. But Treyarch also promises that Blackout will deliver a unique battle royale experience that only a Call of Duty: Black Ops title could provide.

Details on Blackout remain few for now, but the core battle royale gameplay elements are all accounted for. Blackout will offer a huge map, which is said to be 100x the average size of a Call of Duty multiplayer map. The map will feature many more players than a typical Call of Duty multiplayer match, but it seems if Treyarch is uncertain regarding exactly how many. And as for the action, players will be scavenging for equipment and hunting down other players like any other battle royale.

What Treyarch says Blackout is doing differently compared to other battle royale modes is building in all of Black Ops' rich history of gameplay. Blackout will include a ton of content from past Black Ops games, including weapons, gadgets, equipment -- even the map will be made up of past Black Ops maps. There are also hints that the playable Black Ops characters in Blackout aren't just skins, but more like character classes, each with unique gameplay.

Activision and Treyarch clearly believe that Blackout is going to be a staple for Call of Duty: Black Ops from here on. As today's event closed out, Treyarch confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 would not feature a traditional single-player campaign. Blackout will take the single-player mode's place. Otherwise, Black Ops will feature three unique Zombie modes, as well as traditional multiplayer.

More information on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and the Blackout battle royale game mode will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead. Blackout isn't confirmed to be shown at E3 yet, but Treyarch can hopefully make that a reality.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 releases October 12 for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
