Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Slated for 2018, Says Analyst

Call of Duty: Black Ops Having Server Problems - Frank Woods

Activision Blizzard is currently one of the largest and most successful video game companies in the world, consistently putting out the top-selling game each year. However, according to analyst firm Cowen & Company, Activision Blizzard's stock price may drop a bit in 2018, even with the possibility of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 releasing next fall.

In a note to investors, Cowen & Company revealed its predictions about how 2018 will go for Activision Blizzard, lowering the company's predicted potential from "Outperform" to an unspecified lower rating - the first time its rating has been lowered in nine years. However, even though Cowen & Company believes Activision Blizzard's stock price will drop next year, it still thinks Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will sell well.

The main reason why Cowen & Company thinks Activision Blizzard's stock will drop is that it believes eSports won't be as big as predicted. More specifically, Cowen & Company believes that the Overwatch League, one of the most ambitious eSports endeavors we've seen to date, won't be quite as profitable as Activision Blizzard is hoping.

As for whether or not Cowen & Company is correct about its Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 prediction, that's hard to say at this point. The Black Ops games have proven to be some of the most popular titles in the Call of Duty franchise, and it seems unlikely that Activision would deviate from it to try something new. But then again, the same could be said for Modern Warfare, and the company hasn't made a new game in that sub-series since 2011.

If Black Ops 4 does exist, one has to wonder if the game will have a futuristic setting like Black Ops 3, or if it will have a historical one. It's also possible that Black Ops 4 will have a blend of modern and historical settings like previous games in the series. And if a Treyarch job posting spotted last month is any indication, that could very well be the case.

Unfortunately, we won't know anything concrete about Treyarch's 2018 Call of Duty game until next spring when Activision pulls the curtain back on the title. In the meantime, Call of Duty fans have the upcoming Call of Duty: WW2 to look forward to on November 3rd.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is speculated to be in development for release in 2018.
