While Call of Duty fans will see Call of Duty: Vanguard releasing in early November, one leaker is already talking about a future game in the series. However, instead of discussing Call of Duty 2022, their focus is on the franchise’s 2023 release.

The insider in question is Tom Henderson, a source that has proven to be correct about franchises like Battlefield and Call of Duty several different occasions. As such, Henderson has become a go-to source for FPS fans who want early info. While it may be surprising to see the leaker focused on a Call of Duty game that will not release for a few years, it makes sense given that fans already know exactly what to expect from the 2022 release.

With a sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 all-but-confirmed to be 2022’s game, as it makes sense given the reboot’s success, many are wondering what exactly Treyarch will be doing in 2023. Now, it seems like they have their answer, as Tom Henderson has clarified that the next game from the developer will be “semi-futuristic.” This should instantly get fans excited, especially with Henderson’s follow-up comment that the game is “boots on the ground.”

This description makes Call of Duty 2023 sound exactly like the fan favorite Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Released back in 2012, it was set in the near future of 2025 and featured an arsenal of unique weaponry and gadgets. However, it did not take things too far in the eyes of fans, as a traditional movement system was kept in place for the game. While the exosuits of other futuristic Call of Duty games were seen as a bit much by a large chunk of the community, Black Ops 2 did not use them, making it a more enjoyable version of the future for many players.

It will be interesting to see if 2023’s “semi-futuristic” Call of Duty game will be set in the Black Ops universe. Treyarch has been making Black Ops games ever since 2010, however, so it is a safe bet that the game will be part of the same subseries. It will be interesting to see if the campaign takes place after Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and follows David Mason, or if it takes place after Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and looks at Alex Mason’s grandchildren. Likewise, fans will surely be hoping to see iconic weapons like the AN-94, Skorpion EVO, and the KSG returning.

With so many Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 map remakes in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, it will be interesting to see if the 2023 game brings more BO2 locations back. With the two games seemingly sharing a similar setting, this would make sense, though this leak should have Call of Duty fans excited either way.
