Although Black Ops 4 did not feature a single player campaign, it looks like this year’s Call of Duty iteration will. Publisher Activision Blizzard made the announcement during its quarterly earnings call.

While the focus of the call is bound to be Activision Blizzard’s announcement that over 800 employees have been laid off from the company, there was a lot of discussion surrounding its forthcoming titles as well. Specifically, an Activision representative suggested that this year’s Call of Duty will “resonate very positively with our community.”

Once again, Activision plans to achieve that by way of a varied Call of Duty experience that includes a campaign, multiplayer, and co-op gameplay. Both multiplayer and co-op are to be expected from each annual Call of Duty, but it was the mention of a single player campaign that caught the most attention.

Since Black Ops 4 dropped its single-player campaign, there will be continuous questions about whether future franchise iterations will follow suit. Luckily for campaign fans, it sounds as though the feature is coming back this year.

To be fair, Black Ops 4’s developer Treyarch reportedly did begin work on a campaign but eventually scrapped the feature late in development. Moreover, the company was spread thin with the addition of Blackout’s battle royale mode.

On the topic of Blackout, the representative did not mention whether battle royale will be a key pillar of Call of Duty 2019. Given the success of the mode and Black Ops 4 overall, it stands to reason that the franchise is not done with battle royale, but it might take on a new form moving forward. Whether that’s a standalone Blackout option or free-to-play spin-off is unclear.

As far as when fans can expect to hear more about this year’s Call of Duty, there are likely still a few more months to go. Activision Blizzard typically doesn’t hold its big reveal events until the prior game has completed the majority of its content drops. Last year’s reveal event didn’t take place until May but there were dozens of accurate leaks a little beforehand.

Call of Duty 2019 does not currently have a release date.
