When Call of Juarez: The Cartel was revealed to be abandoning the signature old-timey feel of the previous two iterations many gamers balked at the idea of this modern day sequel. Then, when the game’s drug-busting storyline was suggested, the Ciudad of Juarez stepped in to attach another negative connotation to the game.
Since then, developer Techland has unleashed a flurry of details about the game, including 3-player co-op throughout the entire campaign, and things began to look up for The Cartel. Now gamers might be able to get their hands on the game sooner than we thought, as various retailers are posting a June 28th release date.
According to Walmart, Target, GameStop, Amazon, and Best Buy, June 28th is the date for The Cartel and we have no reason to believe otherwise. Publisher Ubisoft along with Techland were hinting at a summer release date and June just so happens to be one of the months that fall under the summer banner.
Adding more credence to the June 28th date is a UK posting for Amazon that lists the game as releasing on the 1st of July. As pointed out by CVG, game’s that typically release on a Tuesday in the US end up releasing on the following Friday in the UK — which just so happens to be July 1st. The 28th isn’t a for sure date, but too many signs are pointing towards it to ignore.
Still, Call of Juarez: The Cartel has an uphill battle if it wants to prove that it retains the signature elements gamers enjoyed from the previous iterations. Though the game features both a relative to characters from the first two games and a setting that is touted as the “new old West,” after the incident with Juarez the game hasn’t been seen in the best of lights.
Thankfully, later looks at the game have shown that The Cartel might at least carry on some of the spirit of the Call of Juarez series. Look for Techland and Ubisoft to confirm the game’s release date (or present their own) some time soon.
Will you be picking up Call of Juarez: The Cartel when it releases? Does the game hold the same appeal that previous games in the series did?
Call of Juarez: The Cartel is rumored to be releasing June 28, 2011 on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
