Following the recent arrival of season 2, rumors have begun to swirl about the future of Call of Duty: Warzone and specifically the Verdansk map. As the original map of this free to play game mode, players have seen tons of changes to it over the course of the year. Train stations activated, bunkers could be hacked into, and even the Stadium roof was blown off in the Season 5 intro, giving players a new area to explore. However, it appears that Activision and Raven Software have even more planned.

Alongside the season 2 update, a mysterious tanker ship crashed onto the shores of Verdansk, bringing zombies to the Battle Royale. While this addition didn't please everyone, the NPC enemies were restricted to the crashed remains of the cargo ship, Vodianoy next to the Zordaya Prison Complex. Thanks to a recent teaser, they soon may be expanding outward.

This week, Activision posted a parody news event on social media, highlighting the arrival of zombies to Verdansk in Call of Duty: Warzone. Intended to be humorous, the small video may be hiding a bit more news than fans would expect. One specific line indicating that the undead have been seen exiting the Warzone shipwreck where they were previously being held has kicked off plenty of fan speculation and thoughts as to where the mode will be heading in season 2.

Many have started to believe that this is a hint that the zombies are going to continue slowly spreading across Verdansk through out the current season. Naturally, if the NPC enemies are going to expand outward, this would seem to indicate that the mode would be experiencing a few changes to how the game is played. While all interactions to this point has been strictly between players, a growing NPC influence would certainly cause some distractions and interruption in a typical match. This speculation also leads directly to another fan discovery earlier this week with leaked audio files from prominent dataminers.

Considering all of the recent rumors of an Plague event and nuclear destruction of Verdansk, this tease shouldn't be too surprising. Datamined information and discovered audio files indicate that a new event could be coming towards the end of the season where players need to work together to push back the zombie outbreak. Things will likely get dire as plague zones open up around the map, eventually leading to a last resort by nuking the map completely. Where the map goes from there is anyone's guess.

Call of Duty: Warzone is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
