The battle royale genre is as seemingly popular as ever, with many dropping into the latest title, Call of Duty: Warzone. Infinity Ward announced it passed 50 million players just the other day, which is a huge growth without a doubt, but how does that compare to other titles like Apex Legends and Fortnite?

Before looking at the data, there's a few caveats to consider. Call of Duty: Warzone has a much bigger franchise name compared to the other two, and it's not the franchise's first time in the BR rodeo either. Fortnite may have been a slow burn but was made in the genre's earliest day (in terms of popularity, anyway). Apex Legends, at the same time, shadow-dropped with literally no marketing.

With that in mind, the data for how fast each game grew (seen below via analyst Daniel Ahmad) is somewhat surprising. Apex Legends hit 50 million 3 days sooner than Warzone despite it doing better in its initial 3 days. It took 16 weeks for Fortnite to hit 45 million, which is a testament to how popular the genre has become. In short, it took days what the genre's most popular game took weeks to do when it first launched.

These numbers likely do not mean much in the grand scheme of things, as each game is popular to its own crowd, but they do hide some surprises that revel in the BR genre's growth. Of course, with such great success and competition, there's been plenty of battle royale flops as well.

Call of Duty: Warzone is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
