Call of Duty: Warzone players maybe have noticed a significant amount of server lag today, as well as yesterday and even before. That's now confirmed to have been caused by ongoing Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against network providers targeting Blizzard and Activision. For now, the DDoS attack appears to have been dealt with, so Call of Duty: Warzone players can jump back in-game. There's no telling whether Blizzard will end up dealing with more attacks soon, though.
Blizzard has spent the last several days dealing with DDoS attacks against network providers, the first recorded example being on Tuesday, March 17. Things had otherwise been fine since Call of Duty: Warzone launched a week prior, yet since the 17th, several more DDoS events have been publically acknowledged via Blizzard's support accounts. These attacks have happened pretty much every day since, including today, Saturday the 21.
Saturday's DDoS attack was acknowledged as of around 3:00 pm PT. Blizzard then provided an update less than a half an hour later saying that the attack appeared to have ended. No justification for the DDoS attacks have been provided, nor has the source claimed the attacks.
Call of Duty: Warzone isn't the only game that's being affected by the DDoS attacks, of course. All of Blizzard's online games have been affected since the attacks target the service providers and not any single game. Activision games are included, naturally.
It's awful timing for a DDoS attack, given the state of the gaming and the world at large. Several games have ongoing events related to the coronavirus pandemic. For example, World of Warcraft has a 100% experience buff and Heroes of the Storm has made all of its heroes free to play for the time being. Call of Duty: Warzone doesn't have a special event, but it did just launch and thus has millions of players trying to play matches without lag.
It's unfortunately likely that the DDoS attacks against service providers connected to Activision and Blizzard games will continue for the foreseeable future. Investigations into the sources of DDoS attacks can take a very long time, if they prove fruitful at all. And given how many people are how playing games, it's a ripe situation for those with a proclivity to cause unnecessary chaos. All game players can do is keep playing and watch Blizzard's social media for information when the DDoS attacks do pop up.
