Even though Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War just recently launched, there are some fans who may not be ready to leave Call of Duty: Modern Warfare behind. While the game is playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X through backward compatibility, an official next-gen version doesn't exist at the time of this writing. However, it appears as though that will change sooner rather than later.

An image making the rounds online and shared by reputable leaker Okami on Twitter shows a PS5 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare listed on the console's dashboard. What exactly a PS5 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare entails is hard to say at the time of this writing, but one has to imagine that it would include some of the next-gen enhancements enjoyed by the PS5 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Bare minimum, one would think that the PS5 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare would up its frame rate to 120 frames per second. It's also quite likely that such a game would also have ray-tracing support. After all, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare already has ray-tracing capabilities when playing the PC version of the game.

Before fans get too excited about the possibility of playing a next-gen version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it should be stressed that it's possible this image has been faked. It's also possible that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare PS5 version is listed erroneously and there aren't any plans to release a next-gen version of the game. Fans will just need to wait for Activision to make an official announcement before getting too excited.

While most attention has now shifted to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold WarCall of Duty: Modern Warfare still has a massive community of players, and likely will for some time to come. It's been teased that more Call of Duty: Modern Warfare content is on the way, even as Warzone becomes integrated with Black Ops Cold War on December 10, so maybe this next-gen upgrade is the content that's been teased.

Alternatively, maybe Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has new maps in the works, though that seems unlikely. Fans will likely have to make due with the selection of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare maps that are available in the game now, and just keep their fingers crossed that popular playlists like Shipment 24/7 become permanent additions to the game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
