It's easy to see why Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is so popular, ranging from the constant updates and new playlists to the additions of interesting operations and more. This constant support is a bit of a double-edged sword, though, as the file size of Modern Warfare is outrageous. Nearly 200 GBs across most platforms, fans have been looking at Infinity Ward to do something about the constant growth.

After all, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 4 is right around the corner and is likely to bump that even higher, while Infinity Ward has promised to look into ways to better partition the data. This file size has received a lot of criticism, some more serious than others, with Cartoon Network's adult-oriented nighttime programming, Adult Swim, taking a lighthearted jab at it.

Last night, one of Adult Swim's text bumps—the black screens with white text—aired right before Rick and Morty. It began innocently enough, stating that Australian researchers had achieved a new world record for internet speed of 44.2 terrabits per second. Adult Swim continued saying this could download 1,000 HD movies in a second or a Call of Duty update in about 2 days. Of course, it didn't name Modern Warfare specifically, but then again, it didn't need to.

Hopefully, Infinity Ward manages to find a way to deal with the escalating file size, as players have recently began deleting Modern Warfare's campaign and spec ops to make additional room for updates, and buying a new external hard drive is difficult for some to keep up. That's not to mention that Modern Warfare, or at least Warzone, are likely to make their way to next-gen consoles, eating up yet again more space to continue playing. Again, many love the game for good reason, but its support comes at a cost.

Hopefully, the next entry, Call of Duty 2020, manages to do better in this regard. All signs point toward it being a Black Ops soft reboot like Modern Warfare is of its subfranchise, and if so, it's the perfect way to replicate the franchise's current success.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
