Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's highly anticipated 2v2 alpha has started one day early. The alpha was originally scheduled to start on Friday, August 23, at 10:00 am PT with pre-loading starting Thursday morning. Instead, the alpha began on Thursday evening with no early warning. The extra day of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare excitement will be added to the alpha's length. Players will still be able to play all the way through the originally scheduled ending on Sunday.
The 2v2 gametype in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a brand new experience. Known by the name Gunfight, the gametype is a pure mix of individual skill and teamwork. During the 2v2 alpha, players will have access to just the Rules of Engagement mode. Rules of Engagement is limited to four players in total, meaning two teams of two players. All players get the same loadout, with both the loadout and spawn locations changing every two rounds. Players can either eliminate their opponents or, in the case of overtime, be the first to reach a flag.
Five maps will be available to play during the 2v2 alpha. Four maps will be smaller versions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's larger 6v6 maps, while two are 2v2 exclusive. Docks and Speedball are the two exclusive maps, with Speedball taking place in a small firing range/shooting course. King is a training warehouse, Pine is a forested area, and Stack is a desert training range. The maps will rotate throughout the weekend.
Keep in mind that this weekend's alpha is just that; an alpha test. While Modern Warfare itself isn't likely in an alpha state, given it's launching in less than two months, it's still facing potentially significant changes based on how the test goes. There are bound to be bugs and technical issues, so players should be patient and willing to report any problems directly to Activision. That's how problems get fixed.

The unfortunate news is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's 2v2 alpha is restricted to PlayStation 4 players. PS4 owners can search on the store for Modern Warfare and download the alpha for free. PS4 players will then get a second exclusive free event when the Modern Warfare open beta starts September 12. PC and Xbox Call of Duty fans will get their chance to play when the open beta comes to all platforms starting September 19. Expect more details on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's beta as it nears.
