With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many gaming events have been cancelled or postponed, including esports tournaments. Fortunately for esports fans, Activision Publishing has decided to start a new tournament with one of 2019's best mobile games, Call of Duty: Mobile.

Activision announced in a press release the Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship 2020 tournament, presented by Sony. What's even better is the tournament isn't exclusive to pre-established esports players, and just about any Call of Duty: Mobile player can sign up.

The tournament season will begin with its first stage on April 30th for eligible Call of Duty: Mobile players and will feature a prize pool of more than $1 million up for grabs. Eligible gamers ranked Veteran or higher in multiplayer will be able to participate in four open qualifiers, held on each weekend from April 30th to May 24th.

Participants have to be at least 18 years old and be in good standing with the game, without any open or undisclosed violations. Players also must use an eligible handset and can't use any external devices that modify the game's controls (such as Bluetooth controllers, mouse and keyboard, or desktop emulator) without the consent of the event administration. The administration has the right to investigate any player deemed in violation of these rules and disqualify them from participating in any future tournaments.

To participate, Call of Duty: Mobile players simply need to click "Sign Up" in the game and their first ten ranked matches will be used to determine their ranking through tournament points. In the event a player earns 80 points in any weekend during the first stage, they'll qualify for the second stage. Players can earn rewards for registering, making progress during the qualifiers, and for qualifying for Stage 2. These rewards will change each weekend, so even those who've already made it to the second stage will want to keep participating. The details of Stage 2 will be shared at a later date on the official website.

Chris Plummer, the vice president of Activision's mobile division, has said it is very excited for this tournament. Almost as excited as fans were when a favorite Modern Warfare 2 map was teased for Mobile. "As the next-evolution in our fan-favorite Ranked Play, this tournament format gives eligible Call of Duty: Mobile players a chance to compete with players from around the world for cash and prizes."

Call of Duty: Mobile has been making regular updates, most recently including a Crescent Moon event, a Gun Game variant, and the Steel Legion update. And like many other esports games, it's been getting increasingly aggressive with its bans against cheaters.
