It didn’t take long for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players to find an overpowered weapon, that being the MP5. Already a powerful weapon in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone, the submachine gun ended up dominating the latest entry’s multiplayer practically overnight. Treyarch tried to address this with a few key nerfs, but, in a rather ironic twist, it accidentally restored the MP5 to its original overpowered glory.

Today was a big day for this year’s COD, as today saw Treyarch release Black Ops Cold War’s first official post-launch update. This balance patch follows the impromptu MP5 nerf it added a few days ago in response to player complaints, which tried to balance the weapon by reducing its base effective damage range by 33% while slightly increasing its recoil. However, according to Treyarch’s newly-launched Trello board, these changes were “unintentionally reverted” thanks to the patch.

Depending on which end of the MP5 players tend to be on, this could either be very good news or very bad news. Thankfully, though, it looks like players won’t have to worry about lobbies being overwhelmed by MP5s again after all. While the Trello board says a fix for the accidental un-nerfing is still scheduled as of this writing, Treyarch confirmed on Twitter this evening that the fix has been deployed and the MP5 is back to being nerfed.

Some players will be sad to see the overpowered MP5 go after its brief return, but if it makes them feel any better, they should still be able to devise powerful loadouts for the MP5 to keep it a viable option on the battlefield, if not exactly an unbalanced one.

As for today’s patch, Treyarch took the opportunity to adjust some of the other weapons that players have found to be a bit too powerful in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Among them is the M16, which has gotten a reduction in its max damage range, a decrease in sprint-to-firing speed, and decreased movement speed while firing. The FFAR 1 also received a couple of noticeable nerfs in the shape of reductions to both max damage and max damage range.

Other than that, the full patch notes touch upon dozens of other changes that have been added to the game today, which include a few buffs to sniper rifles, buffs and nerfs for Scorestreaks and other weapons, and plenty of bug fixes. With any luck, all of these should make for a smoother experience ahead of the start of Black Ops Cold War’s first season next month.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
