In an interview with IGN, developer Dan Vondrake explains that the team chose the Cold War due to its intrigue and history. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is built on top of a pile of declassified documents that gave the entire game a realistic feel despite being a fictional tale. With the first game taking place in the 1960s, the 1980s was close enough to give a similar feeling to players as they had in the first Call of Duty: Black Ops title. The intrigue of the era opened the door for puzzles, riddles, and a whole new look at how a Call of Duty title could be designed.

Still, it is important that the developers did not invalidate the work already done in the Call of Duty: Black Ops franchise. Vondrak explains that they wanted to respect the history of the previous games, so it seemed natural to design it as a sequel to the first as it could hold reutrning characters in new stories.

With there being a massive time jump between the first and second titles, the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fits perfectly in the line as canon. With the threat of nuclear war, high stakes mission, and a deniable operation being the core of the story the developers are positioned perfectly to present an authentic Call of Duty: Black Ops experience.

Information regarding the title continues to be released slowly. As players get closer to a full launch on November 13th, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War patches some last-minute fixes. Leaks will no doubt continue to appear until then, but at least now the developers are sharing information outside of their complicated puzzle promotions.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is set to launch on November 13th for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
