The frequent scarcity of PlayStation 5 consoles has been one of the most widely-publicized stories of the year-and-a-half since its launch. Due to ongoing shortages of semiconductors and a variety of other necessary parts, many retailers have found the consoles in limited supply, with the PS5 shortage expected to last at least until 2024. While many fans have struggled to get their hands on PS5s through official outlets, scalping has become increasingly common with some PS5 owners looking to make a quick buck.

Console scalping has been a rampant issue since the PS5's debut, with consoles often being listed on secondhand websites for exorbitant prices. The shortage of consoles has seen some people buying up large amounts of PS5s only to turn around and sell the consoles for a significantly marked-up price. While Sony has attempted to combat the widespread scalping of PS5s by increasing production and offering more ways for players to buy consoles, scalping remains a widespread issue. Now, a Reddit user recently discovered another example of PS5 scalping with a store charging over $1000 for the console.

The image posted by Reddit user SuperDuperMilk shows a PS5 for sale in a Game Boss store located in Cerritos, California with an absurd price tag. The handwritten sign for the console lists the PS5 for sale at $1300, over 2.5 times the console's MSRP value of $499.99. The comments of the post are filled with fellow PlayStation fans outraged by the ridiculous price of the console, with many calling into question the ethics of the shop's owner.

The scalping issue has not been exclusive to local stores either, as many sellers on sites like Wal-Mart and eBay have looked to profit off the limited supply of PS5s. Several other recent consoles like the Xbox Series X and Steam Deck have also fallen victim to scalpers, with eBay previously shutting down the sale of Steam Decks to address the issue. The Xbox Series X has seen multiple limited-time variants hit the re-sale market for exorbitant prices as well, often listed for well over $1000.

While Sony expects the shortage to continue into next year or the year after, the hardware developer has looked into alternate approaches to ease its supply woes. Earlier this year, Sony ramped up production of PS4 consoles due to the less advanced hardware required for the PS4. However, even with the PS5's persisting supply issues, Sony remains optimistic about the console's future, believing it could outsell the PS4 by 2024. Despite Sony's confidence, the ongoing shortages will likely see scalpers continue to exploit the PS5's scarcity until the supply issues are resolved.
