One of the most highly anticipated horror events this October is the premiere of Guillermo del Toro's new Netflix horror series, Cabinet of Curiosities. Just in time for October, viewers now have an official trailer for the show.

Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities is a horror anthology streaming series that consists of eight standalone episodes. Each one will be written and directed by a different well-known crew of horror filmmakers and based on classic or original horror stories—all hand chosen by del Toro himself. Today viewers got their first real taste of what the Netflix show will feel like in an official trailer.

The trailer is introduced by del Toro, who tells us to imagine our mind “as a cabinet, where you lock up your darkest thoughts and deepest fears.” He then says that viewers are about to find out what happens when they open up that cabinet for the world to see. The rest of the trailer shows little snippets from each of the eight standalone episodes. There are ghosts, demons, strange creatures, and creepy houses. In a quiet morgue, something stirs. In an abandoned storage locker, a mysterious altar is inscribed with a pentagram. Someone being buried alive. A woman with blood pouring from her empty eye sockets. Needless to say, it seems like del Toro is really bringing the horror this time.

Along with this trailer, fans have learned a lot about the show's segments, as reported by Bloody Disgusting. In order of release, the episodes are “Lot 36,” directed by Guillermo Navarro (Narcos), written by Regina Corrado (Deadwood; The Strain), and based on an original story by del Toro; “Graveyard Rats,” written and directed by Vincenzo Natali (In The Tall Grass, Splice), based on the short by Henry Kuttner; “The Outside,” directed by Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, 2016's The Bad Batch), written by Haley Z. Boston (Brand New Cherry Flavor), and based on the short story by Emily Carroll; “The Autopsy,” directed by David Prior (The Empty Man), written by David S. Goyer (Netflix's The Sandman, Dark City, The Dark Knight), and based on a short story by Michael Shea; “Pickman's Model,” directed by Keith Thomas (Firestarter), written by Lee Patterson (Curve), and based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft; “Dreams in the Witch House,” starring Rupert Grint (the Harry Potter series), directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight), written by Mika Watkins (Black Mirror), and based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft; “The Murmuring,” written and directed by Jennifer Kent (The Babadook), based on an original story by del Toro; and “The Viewing,” directed by Panos Cosmatos (Mandy), and written by Cosmatos and Aaron Stewart-Ahn (Mandy).

It appears the show will lean slightly towards cosmic horror. Of the eight stories, two are written by H. P. Lovecraft and one by Lovecraft's friend and fellow Cthulhu mythos writer Henry Kuttner. In addition, one of the episodes is helmed by the writer-director team behind Mandy, a highly surreal and almost cosmic action horror film. In any case, the show looks to be of good production quality, with a fantastic team of directors and based on classic horror stories. Expectations for the show were high based on del Toro's pedigree, and it actually looks like the show might meet those high expectations.

Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities creaks open on Netflix starting October 25, 2022, with two new episodes every following day.
